PIDGEONs of County Meath, Ireland

Except for one exception, nothing is known about these Pidgeons, except what can be found in the sparse parish records. All the early events shown here occurred in Co Meath, and mostly at or near the town of Kells. This suggests a single family, although some church events are RC and others are Church of Ireland. The marriage of Richard and Mary Dias, and the baptisms of the children of Robert & Jane, Robert & Eleanor and Richard & Margaret were Church of Ireland; only a few others were Roman Catholic.

The one exception is George Henry Pidgeon – a grandson of Richard Pidgeon and Mary Dias. In 1840, he and a friend left home and walked to Dublin, where they joined the British army. He served with the 20th East Devonshire Regiment, first in various places in Ireland, before being shipped out to Bermuda, where he survived an outbreak of yellow fever. In 1847, the regiment was transferred to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the following year to Quebec. George eventually joined the Royal Canadian Rifles. He served as a soldier, in total, for 34 years. He married in Canada, and his descendants can be traced in Ontario and Quebec, Canada and in the northern states of the USA such as Michigan and New York.

Several guesses have been made to link to link the early family groups. These are shown with a red ? mark.
